Utrtor Valley
Utror Valley is a scenic high-altitude side valley in Upper Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It lies north of Kalam and forms part of the broader Swat Kohistan region. The valley is known for its dense pine and deodar forests, clear streams, alpine meadows, traditional villages, and access to several beautiful high-altitude lakes. It sits at elevations roughly between 2,200 and 3,000+ meters and is surrounded by peaks of the Hindu Kush range.
Utror serves as an important gateway for trekkers heading to lakes such as Kundol and for those crossing toward the Dir side via Badgoi Pass in summer. Compared with the busier Kalam area, Utror feels quieter and more remote, making it attractive for nature lovers, campers, and those seeking less crowded trails.
From Mingora the drive to Kalam is about 99 km. From Kalam, Utror is roughly 20–25 km farther along a road that starts paved but becomes rough. A regular car can usually reach the main village in good weather, but a 4×4 is recommended, especially after rain or for side tracks. The best season is May/June to September/October when roads and high trails are open. Winter snow often closes higher routes.

Utror Village
The main settlement and practical base of the valley. It has simple guesthouses, local shops, and a riverside setting. Traditional wooden houses and friendly local communities give a glimpse of everyday mountain life in Upper Swat. Most visitors start their lake treks or jeep explorations from here.

Ladu (Lado) Village and Area
A short distance beyond the main Utror settlement, Ladu is the common starting point for the trek to Kundol Lake. It has small tea stalls and basic facilities. The surrounding meadows and forested slopes make it a pleasant stop before the climb begins.

Kundol Lake (Kundal / Kandol Lake)
The highlight of Utror Valley. This alpine glacial lake sits at approximately 3,000–3,050 meters (around 9,950 feet) north of Utror. It is reached by a jeep track to Ladu followed by a moderate 2–4 hour trek through pine forests, streams, and open meadows. The lake is known for its clear green-to-turquoise water, surrounding snow-dusted peaks, and peaceful atmosphere. Camping on the shores is popular in summer. Nearby smaller features include Spin Khwar (White Stream) Lake and areas associated with Khapiro (Pari/Fairy) Lake.

Gabral Valley
An adjacent side valley accessible from the Utror / Kalam area. It features riverside scenery, forests, meadows, and opportunities for trout fishing and camping. Gabral offers a quieter alternative to the main lake trails and is suitable for shorter day trips or overnight stays.

Forests and Meadows
Dense pine and deodar forests cover much of the lower and mid slopes of Utror. Higher up, open alpine meadows appear, especially around the approaches to the lakes. These areas are excellent for short walks, photography, and picnics. In summer the meadows fill with wildflowers.
Waterfalls and Streams
Several small to medium waterfalls and cascading streams appear along the trails, particularly on the route to Kundol Lake and in side nullahs. Ladu Waterfall and other seasonal falls add to the scenery during the snowmelt period (early to mid-summer).
Desan Meadows and Surrounding High Pastures
Open high meadows in the upper reaches of the valley system. These provide panoramic views and are used by local herders in summer. They form part of the broader trekking landscape around Utror and the approaches to higher lakes.

Badgoi Pass Connection
In the short summer window (roughly July to early September), the high Badgoi Pass links the upper end of the Utror / Kalam side with Kumrat Valley in Upper Dir. The crossing involves rough jeep tracks and high open ground, including areas such as Dasht-e-Laila. It is suitable only for experienced drivers and well-prepared groups.

Accommodation is simple — basic guesthouses in Utror village and camping higher up. Facilities are limited, so carry water purification, snacks, warm layers, and rain gear. Mobile signal is weak or absent in the upper parts of the valley. Hiring a local guide for the Kundol trek is recommended for first-time visitors.
Utror Valley offers a more peaceful and authentic mountain experience than the busier sections of Swat. Its combination of traditional villages, dense forests, clear streams, and the beautiful Kundol Lake makes it a rewarding destination for travellers who enjoy nature and moderate trekking. A day trip from Kalam is possible for the main lake, while 2–3 days allow a more relaxed exploration of the valley and its surroundings.
